Though the Bay Area’s ocean temperatures rarely exceed 60 degrees, and its famous fog and city skylines may not make you think of surfing, ideal destinations dot the peninsula and beyond, offering an enjoyable experience for athletes of all levels. Of course, the cold waters might be a deterrent, but with a wetsuit and a warm cup of coffee from one of the Bay’s top cafes, you’ll have everything you need to make the most of the area’s unique surfing conditions.
The wintertime, though sometimes limited by harsh weather conditions, gives some of the largest waves of the entire year. Year-round, however, it is important to stay safe by checking weather conditions, using proper gear, and looking out for marine life.
Here are a few of the best surfing destinations in the Bay Area:
1. Bolinas Beach, Bolinas: Only 13 miles northwest of San Francisco, Bolinas is the perfect California beach town. Surfers of all skill levels can find appropriate waves at Bolinas Jetty or Bolinas Point, as well as a strong surfing community. The sun is also usually out in the region, so it is the perfect place to enjoy the beach and some fresh oysters.
2. Ocean Beach, San Francisco: Though not suggested for beginners due to frequent and strong rip currents, Ocean Beach is one of the most famous surfing spots in the Bay Area. Nestled on the western edge of the SF peninsula, just north of Golden Gate Park, the beach is also a perfect place to enjoy a meal and the views.
3. Montara State Beach, San Mateo: Located south of Pacifica on the picturesque Pacific Coast Highway, Montara State Beach is commonly referred to as ‘mini Mavericks’ for its wonderful surf conditions. When the waves are below four feet tall, it is a perfect spot for beginners, but it can sometimes be too dangerous. If the waves are ever too dangerous, however, this beach also has some of the best views in the state.
