Happy Fourth of July! Independence Day is approaching quickly, and the Bay Area is getting ready to host exciting celebrations fit for the whole family. From impressive fireworks shows and delicious barbeques to lively parades, there is something for everyone to celebrate.
San Francisco has celebrated this holiday since the purchase that brought the territory into the United States in 1850, with early celebrations featuring parades, cannon salutes, and public readings of the Declaration of Independence. In modern times, these celebrations continue to bring the community together, blending historical traditions with modern entertainment.
Here are a few of our favorite ways to celebrate the Fourth of July this year:
1. Fourth of July Fireworks at the Waterfront: Probably the most iconic fireworks show in the Bay Area, enjoy the exciting light show at Fisherman’s Wharf and the Northern Waterfront with a backdrop featuring San Francisco’s most iconic landmarks. Though the fireworks don’t start until 9:30 pm, we recommend arriving early to enjoy local performances, street vendors, and food trucks. Find out more here.
2. Palo Alto Summer Festival and Chilli Cookoff: On the Peninsula, celebrate Independence Day with a unique twist! Taste and vote for your favorite local chili while enjoying other themed activities and live music. Find this chili-land in Mitchell Park from 11 am – 3pm. See more details about previous winners and entrance requirements here.
3. Pier 39’s Independence Day Celebration: Before heading to the waterfront, celebrate with live entertainment and family-friendly themed activities at Pier 39. Arrive anytime after 3 pm for a day full of fun in one of San Francisco’s most beautiful piers. Visit their website here for more details.
However you choose to celebrate this holiday, we hope you can embrace the patriotic spirit and make this Independence Day a memorable one!
