Happy holidays! We hope you have had a wonderfully Bay Area start to the holiday season with rain showers, mild temperatures, and maybe some festive treats. As we prepare to bid farewell to the Christmas season, another special celebration begins: Three Kings Day.
Three Kings Day, or Epiphany, marks the end of the Christmas season for many, with a celebration full of joy, tradition, and community. The traditionally Christian holiday marks the day that the Three Wise Men visited the baby Jesus, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. It marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas, and is traditionally celebrated as much as Christmas day, on January 6th. If you are in the Bay Area, there are plenty of ways to honor the holiday, whether you are looking to embrace its cultural roots or just enjoy a final celebration. Here are some of our favorite ways to honor this holiday in the Bay Area:
1. Get a Traditional Rosca de Reyes: Any Epiphany celebration is not complete without this traditional sweet bread shaped like a crown and decorated with dried fruits. A tiny baby figurine is hidden inside of the Rosca to be found when cutting it open. Check out La Reyna Bakery in the Mission District or Las Hijas Del Gallo Bakery in South City for your own Rosca!
2. Attend a Community Celebration: Across the Bay Area you can find local community centers and churches putting on special family-friendly events featuring traditional music, storytelling, and even visits from the Three Kings. Historically, the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Art Events has hosted an exciting celebration, as well as the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose.
3. Give Back: Three Kings Day is traditionally a time for giving. This year, participate in local charity events, with organizations like Peninsula Food Runners, The Samaritan House, Silicon Valley Pet Project, and more.
