Though San Francisco has always been home to food enthusiasts, the newest Michelin Guide has only solidified its status at the top of foodies lists. The 2024 Michelin Guide has awarded new recognitions to several new restaurants in the area, celebrating San Francisco’s cultural history through fine cuisine. Whether you are an experienced foodie, or excited to dip your toes into the fine dining scene, these newly-starred restaurants are a great start in an unforgettable dining experience.

First published in 1900, the Michelin Guide started as a travel guide to encourage more driving (and, thus, tire sales!), but quickly became synonymous with the greatest restaurants in the world. The awarding of Michelin stars (from one to three) has become one of the most prestigious honors in the culinary world, signifying excellence in cuisine, service, and ambiance. The Bay Area alone boasts around 50 Michelin starred restaurants, exemplifying its status as a culinary hub.

Here are some of the most exciting inductees to the Michelin Guide:

1. Nari: Located in Japantown, Nari brings a modern, uniquely Californian twist to Thai cuisine. Chef Pim Techamuanvivit, who also heads the one-Michelin-starred Kin Khao, creates a dining experience that is both sophisticated and deeply rooted in Thai flavors and Californian ingredients. 2. Movida: Found in Mission Bay, Movida has quickly gained attention for its exciting fusion of Mexican and Persion cuisine, a small menu with many surprises. Try singular “tostadas” made with a crispy base of golden brown tahdig, topped with luscious beef birria accented with sumac, or a fried poblano filled with a savory mixture of rice, spiced lamb and queso Oaxaca. Abacá: Celebrating Filipino cuisine, Chef Francis Ang’s Abaca has earned its first star by offering vibrant and authentic dishes that bring the rich flavors of the Philippines to San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. The menu features a mixture of Philippine cuisine and Californian produce, as well as Chef Ang’s affinity for pastry. His baked goods are also available in the morning at the in-house panaderia.
