As temperatures begin to drop and days become shorter, we are starting to transition from fall to winter. Though the Bay Area is beautiful year-round, some fall activities won’t be available much longer.

Here are our favorite things to enjoy as this fall season comes to an end.

The fresh fall produce!

At your local farmers market, you can find some of the best apples, persimmons, pomegranates, greens, and winter squash in the country. California’s relatively mild winter temperatures and fertile soil allow crops to thrive these months for everyone to enjoy. If you are looking for a more hands-on experience, the Bay Area has a variety of self-picking apple orchards to enjoy. Head to Apple Hill or Chileno Valley Ranch to snack on the freshest apples and enjoy some cider!

Crabbing season!

The Bay Area is known for its delicious Dungeness crabs, and you can catch your own starting this weekend. If you are on your own, Pacifica Municipal Pier and Torpedo Wharf in the Presidio are perfect spots to enjoy the fall weather, some views, and endless crab! You can also enjoy a guided expedition across the Bay Area with expert crab harvesters.

Look for the last Humpback whales in Monterey!

Though further down the coast, you can find the last of these giant ocean creatures migrating southwards near Monterey Bay. Enjoy a day in the water, searching for whales, otters, and seals along the way. In the winter months, you can return to find Gray whales and Orcas along the same coast.

Grab some hot cocoa and a pair of ice skates!

As winter looms, the Bay Area’s numerous pop-up ice skating rinks are starting to open. Enjoy a day in Union Square, San Francisco, and while you are there, head to Ghirardelli or Dandelion Chocolate to have some hot cocoa or experience San Mateo on Ice in Central Park, San Mateo.
