As the world-famous wine region’s peak season comes to an end, it is the perfect time to visit Napa Valley’s countless wineries and other related activities. Just a short road trip from San Francisco and the Upper Peninsula, Napa offers a serene blend of world-class wineries, picturesque landscapes, and rich history, making it a perfect destination for families, couples, and wine enthusiasts.

The history of this region dates back to the 19th century when settlers recognized the area’s agricultural potential. The first commercial winery was established in 1858 by John Patchett, and the first large-scale winery opened in 1861. Though Prohibition caused the region to shut down in the early 20th century, it experienced an important renaissance in the mid-20th century that helped establish it as a global superpower in the wine industry. In particular, the 1976 Judgement of Paris, which saw Napa outshine France in blind taste-testing rounds, cemented Napa Valley’s status on the world wine stage and contributed to the booming region we see today.

Whether you are visiting as a family, looking for a romantic getaway, or are a wine enthusiast, Napa has something to offer! Here are some of our favorite wineries to visit this time of the year:

1. Castello di Amorosa: Perfect for both families and couples, this medieval-inspired castle winery has activities for adults and kids alike. Families can explore the castle’s grand rooms, dungeons, and towers, followed by a tasting of delicious wines and grape juice for the little ones. Couples are invited to explore the castle corridors and enjoy private wine tastings with a view. Visit their website here for more information.

2. Stag’s Leap Winery: Famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon that triumphed in the 1976 Judgement of Paris, this winery is a must-see for enthusiasts eager to taste history. Enjoy their historic collection with stunning views of the Napa Valley landscape. Learn more at their website here.

3. Robert Mondavi Winery: One of Napa’s most iconic wineries, Robert Mondavi offers comprehensive tours exploring the process of winemaking. Learn more about the basics of winemaking while enjoying some of the best wines in the area! Visit their website here for more information and bookings.

For those planning a visit, we recommend considering weekdays to avoid crowds, and making reservations in advance as many fill up. Best wishes!
