¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Even if it has not maintained as much importance in Mexican culture, this holiday brings together Mexican-americans across the country in celebration of Mexican-american culture and liberation. Whether you are excited to celebrate the holiday with a block party and car show, or just want to enjoy some of the best Mexican cuisine, San Francisco hosts some of the best Cinco de Mayo events every year.
Though it is sometimes confused with Mexican Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican victory over the Second French Empire in the Battle of Puebla of 1862. This battle was significant as the greatly outnumbered Mexican army –4,000 to the French army’s 8,000 – defeated its colonial power for the first time in over 50 years. Many historians also argue that, had the French won in the Battle of Puebla, France may have aided the confederate states only 3 years later, and the destiny of the United States Civil War may have been altered.
As the Mexican-american population in the United States has increased over the decades, the celebration of Cinco de Mayo has become one of the most important celebrations of Mexican culture and tradition in the United States. Large celebrations occurring across the country have popularized the holiday, sharing Mexican food, dance, and other traditions with the entire country.
In San Francisco, you can celebrate with the Cinco de Mayo District Six festival and enjoy live music and food trucks, or the San Francisco Lowriders Council Car Show supporting Josh O’Connel High School. If you are excited to enjoy some Mexican cuisine, head to San Francisco’s Mission district for tacos and burritos at Tacos el Patron, La Oaxaqueña, El Farolito, Papalote, and more.
We hope you enjoy this holiday however you celebrate it!
