Happy holidays! Holiday festivities are in full swing as December begins this week. As preparations for the holiday season begin, the various festive light displays cannot be missed!

Christmas lights can be traced back to candles used, primarily in Germany in the 17th century, to illuminate the ornaments that adorned their Christmas trees. Since then, however, large and festive electric lights have become almost synonymous with the holiday season.

From Fourth Street in West Berkeley to Santana Row in San Jose and Union Square in San Francisco, there is a hint of winter in the Bay Area air. Giant menorahs, Christmas trees, and festive lights are lighting up the streets of the Bay Area and are ready to be enjoyed by everyone!

Here are some of our favorite places in the Bay Area to spot the grandest festive displays:

  1. Filoli Gardens: This historic garden in San Mateo County transforms into a winter wonderland in mid-November with light installations and indoor and outdoor decorations. Book ahead to experience their festive events, including Santa Days, Holiday Teas, and Curator Tours.
  2. The Exploratorium: Experience the new exhibit at this family-friendly museum on Pier 15: Glow: Discover the Art of Light. Browse the galleries for dramatic and exciting light art and learn from the experts who contributed.
  3. Union Square: Celebrate the holidays with Union Square’s impressive Christmas tree, giant menorah, and ice skating rink.
  4. IlluminOdyssey: Returning for its seventh year, IlluminOdyssey is an immersive, interactive exhibit exploring light fit for the whole family. This San Mateo County museum and zoo’s four-level building will become a darkened exhibit full of fun and learning.
