Alcatraz is a Bay Area staple, but how well do you know it? If you haven’t been there recently, add it to your list of weekend plans. Alcatraz is an island rich in stories and, to this day, remains one of the biggest mysteries in the area.

While it was known as a prison in the 1900s, the most notable event on Alcatraz was the great escape of John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris in 1962. After a 17-year probe, the escapees were never found, and whether they survived remains a mystery. Because this can be hard to grasp, head to the island to imagine the story for yourself.

The prison has since become a museum where visitors can glimpse the facilities and living conditions that prisoners were subjected to. From barber shops to solitary confinement cells, the tour is highly immersive, with audio guides for guests to partake in a self-tour. For anyone who wants to gain a true sense of the eerie feeling of the island, the night tour is a fantastic experience. You’ll be able to watch the sunset over the City before heading to the mysterious island, where you may encounter one of the three ghosts of Alcatraz.

Even if you’ve been, it’s worth returning. In July 2024, the island added its newest exhibit, “Birds of a Changing Climate,” which provides extensive insight into the lesser-known fact that water birds congregate in the area. Visitors have a unique opportunity to see the birds mating, nesting, and hunting, a rare opportunity in the Bay Area.

If you leave wanting more, be sure to check out the Escape From Alcatraz Film which offers a fantastic fictionalization of the movie. While it is inaccurate, it offers a visual sense of the journey these three men took in their journey to escape Alcatraz.
