With colder temperatures, high winds, and possible precipitation, the Bay Area winter is well underway this week. It is reported that some parts of the North Bay and Inner Peninsula regions could drop below 40 degrees this weekend, and possible rains Saturday evening following an exceptionally dry winter. As you try to stay dry and warm these upcoming weeks, check out the iconic San Francisco Flower Markets’ new (indoor!) location.
The San Francisco Flower Market has a long history of providing fresh California bouquets to the Bay Area. In 1912, 54 Japanese American florists and growers founded what was then the largest flower market in Northern California, the California Flower Market, housed in a small warehouse on Fifth and Howard St. In 1956, it grew to a location in Mission Bay, where it stayed until just a few weeks ago. In 2025, the market moved to a 125,000-square-foot building on 901 16th street, and became a nonprofit for the first time. The market has also prioritized maintaining the historic Potrero Hill brick building it inhabits, as well as donating 5 million dollars to the Sunnydale Community Center Project, 4 million dollars in public art, and the construction of a 22,000-square-foot childcare center. See more about their community involvement here.
Every day, over 45 local Bay Area vendors populate the market, where an estimated 400 shoppers arrive. See more about the individual vendors here. The market is available to the public every Wednesday-Saturday from 8am-2pm. See more here. If you are interested in a more extensive history of the market, you can book a tour here. Be sure to check the improved space out before all of your upcoming holidays!
