We’re three weeks into the new year. Many of us made resolutions to get organized. If you’re getting started or stuck, here are a few tips to help you get your home organized and ready to take on the new year.

20 Tips for Getting Organized

1. Commit to decluttering
2. Get your family on board
3. Put away now—do not pile for later
4. Focus on functionality over visual appeal
5. Take organizing in small steps—start small and build on successes
6. Remove extra hangers from closets
7. Practice the art of purging by taking a hard look through clothes (and other stuff) and have an honest evaluation about what you should keep—donate the rest
8. Get donations out of the house as soon as possible—things left by the door have a way of creeping back into closets and drawers
9. Treat storage and surfaces wisely
10. Use more hooks
11. Label all storage boxes and bins
12. Use clear boxes and bins
13. Look through your freezer and purge the frost bitten and unidentifiable
14. Maximize vertical space
15. Adopt one-in/one-out rule and carefully consider new items
16. Don’t keep anything out of obligation
17. Know what you need to organize before buying containers
18. Take advantage of Lazy Susans in all cabinets
19. Organize each season
20. Don’t procrastinate—just get it done
