Summer is here, and the sun is shining in the bay! With longer days and warm weather, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the beautiful beaches and unique wildlife. There is no better way to see the bay than to explore the tidepools full of crabs, sea stars, and even anemones. There are so many places to see these incredible creatures, but these are three of the top spots.
Natural Bridges State Beach: Santa Cruz
This beach is known for the natural “bridge” that sits in the ocean with picturesque views, but be sure to say hi to the locals at low tide! The pools are best visited at low tide, so be sure to time your trip accordingly, or prepare for a scenic beach day. Upon arrival, you won’t be disappointed by the bright-colored emeralds and dozens of crabs that call this stunning beach home.
Fitzgerald Marine Reserve: Moss Beach
A true hidden gem in the bay is Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. Along the rugged shoreline of Moss Beach is a world of fun waiting to be discovered. Because they have various title zones, this reserve is one of your best options to see dozens of creatures. Not only will you get to see sea lemons and lined chitons, but you’ll be able to interact with naturalists who are eager to help you gain a more profound love for the natural life along the coast.
Point Lobos State Park: Carmel
Looking for a road trip? Head down to Point Lobos in Carmel to visit the “crown jewel of California’s state parks.” Settled among the Monterey cypress trees, Point Lobos is well worth the drive. While the views will be tide-dependent, there is no doubt that you’ll see something incredible. From Abalone and Turkish Towels to Sea Sponges and Sea Urchins, the pools are filled with diverse wildlife and are a must-see spot this summer.
