BOO! Halloween festivities are back this week as the 31st rolls around this Tuesday! So, it’s time to finalize the costumes and prepare for the evening events to follow.
Modern Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, developed from the ancient Celtic ritual of Samhain, which celebrated the changing of seasons from light to dark (summer to winter). Traditionally, a bonfire would be set, treats would be prepared, and costumes would be worn to ward off evil spirits. Throughout many years, and under early Christian influence, the holiday morphed into All Hallows Eve, and, eventually, Halloween.
Though Halloween originated in Europe, the holiday became the celebration we recognize today when it was brought to what is now the United States by early English settlers. Originally, people carved turnips and filled them with candles to repel evil spirits, but the Americans switched from turnips to pumpkins. Perhaps the most identifiable part of Halloween, though, are the many books and movies that define its association with all things dark, spooky, and undead.
Nowadays, towns all over the world celebrate this holiday with festivals, parades, theme park events, and, of course, trick-or-treating. No matter how it is celebrated, or which aspects of the holiday are celebrated, it has become a global phenomenon that encourages fun, play, and laughter.
In the Bay Area, you never have to go too far to find a street full of impressive decorations and spooky fun! Here’s a few of our favorite places to trick-or-treat and enjoy the Fall cheer:
Burlingame (Cabrillo Ave): Accessible by a nearby CalTrain station, Cabrillo Ave is full of exciting decorations fit for the whole family.
Millbrae (Taylor St): Perfect for children and adults, this neighborhood closes their streets in preparation for a night of candy-filled fun.
Menlo Park (Pope St): This neighborhood is full of lights and young children ready to celebrate the holiday!
We hope your Halloween is filled with ghostly fun and enjoyment!
