Exciting news for tech enthusiasts and Bay Area residents alike: Waymo, the self-driving car company, has officially opened its services to all of San Francisco! This marks a significant milestone in technological development and brings the future of the automobile industry to the heart of the Bay Area. Waymo has been a leading force in developing self-driving technology since its inception in 2009, and has finally brought its technology to San Francisco after a long period of extensive testing and development. You now might spot driverless cars transporting customers, and can enjoy a ride yourself!
In contrast to Waymo’s other operating city, Phoenix, San Francisco brings unique challenges to self-driving technology that lengthened the development process. Windy roads, steep hills, dense traffic, and unpredictable weather make the city especially difficult to drive in, and even more challenging for Waymo’s cars. Rest assured, however, that after 6 years of transporting passengers in the city, Waymo’s team is more than equipped for all situations. In fact, one of Waymo’s prime motivations is improving road safety, partnering with MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) to prevent casualties from reckless driving. Compared to the average human San Francisco driver, Waymo has a 78% reduction in injury crashes, and a 55% reduction in police-reported crashes, making the city roads safer one at a time.
Waymo’s San Francisco fleet is also all-electric and sources its 100% renewable energy from San Francisco’s CleanPowerSF program, a non-profit program that aims to provide safe and easy access to renewable energy to all Bay Area residents. Since August 2023, Waymo has helped curb the city’s emissions by an estimated 570,000 kg, and hopes to continue that path in the future. Waymo’s impact on the Bay Area is only just starting! With plans to expand their fleet beyond San Francisco, Waymo will certainly make an impact on the Bay Area.
If you are interested in taking a ride with a Waymo, the steps are simple:
1. Download the Waymo app: Available on Apple and Android phones, the Waymo app will act much like an Uber or Lyft app when hailing a driverless car.
2. Sign Up and Request a Ride: Once you’ve registered, you can request a ride anywhere in San Francisco and wait for the iconic white vehicle to pick you up.
3. Enjoy Your Ride: Once in the vehicle, you can sit back and enjoy the views of the city knowing that Waymo is always prioritizing your safety.
San Francisco is known for its forward-thinking spirit and embracing Waymo is yet another step toward a smarter, safer, and more sustainable city. Buckle up and enjoy the ride into the future! Find out more at their website here.
