Every June, the Bay Area transforms into a vibrant celebration of love, diversity, and unity as it honors the LGBTQ+ community and its history in the city. San Francisco and the Peninsula have countless opportunities for all ages to join in on the celebration and acknowledgment of the past and future of this community.

Historically, San Francisco has been an important landmark of the LGBTQ+ movement in the country. This activism began in the 1950s and 60s, where groups like the Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis became some of the first organizations to campaign for LGBTQ+ rights. In 1966, Compton’s Cafeteria Riot in the Tenderloin was one of the first recorded LGBTQ+ riots, predating the Stonewall riots by three years. Today, you can appreciate these pivotal moments and figures in history with guided tours through the Castro District and visits to Harvey Milk’s former camera shop.

Here are a few of our favorite ways to celebrate Pride Month this June:

  1. San Francisco Pride Parade: The highlight of Pride Month in San Francisco is undoubtedly the San Francisco Pride Parade. Held on the last weekend of June, this iconic event attracts hundreds of thousands of participants and spectators from around the world. The parade features a dazzling array of floats, performances, and contingents representing a diverse spectrum of identities and causes. Visit their website here for more information and opportunities to get more involved!
  2. San Mateo Pride Picnic: The annual Pride Picnic in San Mateo’s Central Park on Saturday, June 8, offers a family-friendly environment with live music, games, and food. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors, connect with the local LGBTQ+ community, and learn more about the history of this community in the Bay Area. Visit their website here for additional information and to sign up to volunteer.
  3. Frameline Film Festival: The oldest and largest LGBTQ+ film festival in the world, Frameline takes place in San Francisco, featuring a wide range of films that explore LGBTQ+ themes and stories. Visit their website here for information on screenings and other festival activities!

… and many more! Bay Area pride celebrations range from small panel discussions to some of the largest parades in the world. We hope that however you choose to celebrate this June, the spirit of San Francisco’s Pride celebrations – as a testament to the power of community, activism and resilience – can stay alive!
